Podington Garden Centre started as a serious enterprise in 1976. We are now celebrating over 30 years of gardening and demonstrating our love of plants and gardens.  Here is a brief history of Podington Garden Centre and how it all began…

Colin and Norma Read started a small Nursery in about 1976, called Podington Nurseries, and grew mostly vegetables, including a commercial crop of lettuce and celery. This developed quickly into bedding plants and a limited range of own produced nursery stock. The bulk of the land on which the Garden Centre and Car Park now stands was down to growing areas. The shop then was in the garage at the rear of a private house in the High Street, Podington

In April 1982 Colin Read decided his wife had got a better job than his and decided to set up and run a Garden Centre. Over the years Podington Nurseries growth has been superb and now employs over 74 people.  Their two sons Philip and Jonathan have also grown with the business and have taken the roles of Horticultural Director and Operations Director respectively.

The centre has been developed into a place where no-one would expect to put a large Garden Centre, with two entrances, in a small village that certainly does not give any impression of what's inside. Once inside you will find a large 200+ car park, a 25,000 square foot covered shop and a plant area containing over 9,000 varieties of plants.

To become the “best” Garden Centre in the area has meant concentrating on providing friendly customer help and advice with a vast range of quality garden products and giving good value for money.

All the developments at Podington have their customers in mind and this includes maintaining interest as well as information and easy traffic flow.

Podington Garden Centre will continue to grow and develop. It continues to lead the field with friendly customer service second to none.
